Popular East Tampa Man Dies After Lengthy Illness
A popular East Tampa man has died following a lengthy illness. Mr. Elsie Hammond was 69-years- old.
A Tampa native, Mr. Hammond was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elsie (Georgia) Ham- mond. Although he was born with a birth ailment known as dwarfism he never allowed it to interfere with his life.
He attended the public schools of Hillsborough County and graduated from Middleton High School with the class of 1965. While at Middleton, he served as the school’s mascot.
Although he was small in stature, standing less than 5 feet, he was a giant in terms of the work he did in the community.
Mr. Hammond was employed as a lifeguard and taught many children who attended the Boys & Girls Club of America how to swim.
Mr. Hammond was also employed at the Tampa Housing Authority for sev- eral years. During his tenure with the organiza- tion, he was often recog- nized for his dedicated service. He received Certifi- cates of Appreciation from the agency in 1993, 1994, 1995, and 2002.
MR. ELSIE HAMMOND 9/3/1946 to 5/22/2016
He was also recognized as “A Donor of the Year” in 2002 by the Help Hospital- ized Veterans organization.
Ms. Vivian Heyward,
a longtime friend said, “He moved into our community about 45 years ago and al- ways gave of himself. He had been ill for a long time and was under the care of Hospice at the time of his death. Ms. Margaret Stillings was his caregiver
“He had health insur- ance, but he didn’t have any life insurance. We are hop- ing that the community will help.”
Mr. Hammond is sur- vived by 2 sisters, 2 broth- ers, and other family members and friends.
The funeral for Mr. Hammond has been tenta- tively planned for Saturday, June 4th.
Jackson’s Funeral Home is in charge of handling arrangements.
