Mrs. Ada Mae Parker Jones was a native of Pittsburgh, PA and a resident of Tampa since 1978. She was educated by Al- lengheny County Public Schools and was a member of Holsey Temple C. M. E. Church. Mrs. Jones retired in New York as a Nurse and relocated to Tampa after retirement. She had no friends or relatives in the area, but wanted to get away from the cold. Upon her arrival she set- tled in the Progress Village com- munity and she had a desire to reach out to the youth. She first established a backyard Bible club for one year and then she organized the youth to show their joy that they had found in serving the Lord through love and fellowship.
Each month they served at a different church similar to choir unions to share the Good News. They began with youth groups from 4 churches and it later grew to 10 churches. The youth would take complete charge of the service. They would usher, take up the collections, conduct devotion, give the welcome ad- dress and any task that needed to be done. Mrs. Jones was adamant about the youth staying involved by providing guest speakers, workshops and reli- gious activities to keep them in church and motivated to learn and enjoy themselves.
She was very proud of “Youth Sings the Gospel” which was a outreach ministry through song that Mrs. Jones started. It con- sisted of youth ranging in age from 5 - 15 years old, who trav- eled throughout the county giv- ing song service. There was approximately 100 members from Thonotosassa, Plant City, Clearwater, Tampa, and Progress Village.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her special daughter, Nancy Gilbert; longtime friends, Catherine Buford of Detroit, MI and Beatrice Beasley of Tampa; godchildren, Kathy Hayes, Eddie Wright, Jr. and a host of others; Christian friends, Terrace and Gloria Lewis, Audrey Roadus, Levi Small, Helen Thompson and a host of other sorrowing loved ones.
