Kendrick Lamar’s Song ‘Alright’ Inspires Scholarship
KENDRICK LAMAR
While his rap peers have been feuding over ghostwriting and touring, Kendrick Lamar continues to inspire community activism and education. K. Dot’s To Pimp A Butterfly track “Alright” has become a protest anthem, and the West Coast representative’s song is also the inspiration for a new college scholarship.
The Philadelphia based Hip Hop outlet OogeeWoogee has established the “Be Alright” scholarship for a High Tech High School student. Kendrick visited the North Bergen, New Jersey school after English teacher Brian T. Mooney’s blog about including To Pimp A Butterfly in his lessons went viral.
“We always wanted to create a Hip Hop inspired scholarship, said Wilkine Brutus, content director of OogeeWoogee. “‘Al- right’ came at the right time and his (Kendrick’s) visit to the high school gave us a concrete idea of what we wanted.”
One High Tech graduate will receive $1,500 for college tu- ition and books. OogeeWoogee plans to expand the scholarship nationwide in the future.
Success Of N.W.A. Biopic Leads To ‘Dogg Pound 4 Life’ Movie Already In The Works
Snoop Dogg, Tupac and Daz
LOS ANGELES – Oft-trou- bled music mogul Suge Knight has filed a $200 mil- lion defamation lawsuit against Dr. Dre and Ice Cube over the portrayal of his persona in the surprise blockbuster “Straight Outta Compton.”
The 50-year-old former Death Row Records CEO says Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who serve as executive producers, defamed his character by mak- ing him appear “soft” in the film. In a statement released by his lawyer Knight stated:
“That entire story was bullsh*t. You think I let Eazy get off that easy? I beat that man within an inch of his life before he signed those papers. I was knocking dudes out daily. If they are gonna show Suge, then they need to show the real Suge. I’ve been the realist gangsta in this biz from day one, and I gonna be the realist until the casket drops.
Y’all know Dre ain’t built like that. Y’all really think I let that man scream in my face like that? I would’ve rearranged his face if he ever took that tone with me. He also didn’t just leave Death Row like that. He cried like the little bitch he is begging me to let him keep his music, but I Debo’ed that and it wasn’t a damn thing he was going to do about. He was a mark then and he is a mark now. I ran the entire California rap music scene for decades.
SUGE KNIGHT
No one on any label made a move without my say so. I don’t know who that soft n*gga was in that movie, but it wasn’t Suge Knight.”
The Los Angeles County Jail where Knight is being held on murder charges in under inves- tigation for allowing Knight to watch the film.
Suge was arrested in Janu- ary for an incident in which he ran over and killed rap pro- ducer Terry Carter on the set of “Straight Outta Compton.” Knight is claiming self defense and said his life was in danger. Ice Cube nor Dr. Dre have yet to respond to the lawsuit.
Terry Carter’s family are also suing Dr. Dre and Ice Cube for wrongful death alleg- ing they used known gang members in a hostile area which created a “dangerous sit- uation” by attempting to create an “atmosphere of authentic- ity”.
Hollywood is known for cashing in on a successful trend. Right now N.W.A and West Coast Hip Hop history are breaking box office records, and the result appears to be a follow-up to the $60 million making movie Straight Outta Compton. TMZ re- ports Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Warren G, and Tha Dogg Pound are set to be the sub- jects of an upcoming movie. TDP member Daz Dillinger told the site a motion picture titled Dogg Pound 4 Life is currently in the works.
The film is said to include N.W.A. members Ice Cube
and Dr. Dre, but the actors from Straight Outta Compton will not be reprising their roles. However, Dr. Dre’s son Curtis Young is already set to play his father. Cube and Dre are not attached to Dogg Pound 4 Life, but ap- parently Cube has approved the idea.
Tha Dogg Pound, Snoop Dogg, and 2Pac were all cen- tral figures in the rise of Dr. Dre and Suge Knight’s Death Row Records. Knight will be portrayed in Dogg Pound 4 Life, but he is not going to be part of the produc- tion of the movie.
Actor Who Played Tupac In Straight Outta Compton Set To Star In Tupac Biopic
While portraying the late Tupac in the N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Comp- ton, Marcc Rose caught the eye of director John Single- ton and it looks like they will be working on a project of their own.
While promoting Compton, Rose spilled the beans about he and Singleton working on a Tupac biopic.
“Me and director John Sin- gleton are trying to brain- storm and form together a proper biopic for him,” the 23- year-old told Yahoo! News. “Hopefully if everything works out we can make it work.”
It turns out that Rose was also a part of the first Tupac movie that Singleton was in- volved in, but they both ended up cutting ties with the project
Marcc Rose and director John Singleon
back in April.
“When Singleton exited so
did I,” he said. “If the rights to the biopic are returned to Pac’s mom, Afeni Shakur, John Singleton and I will be reassociated with it.”
Wiz Khalif Has Encounter With Police
The details are scant, but it appears that rapper Wiz Khalifa had a violent en- counter with police. The rap- per posted a video and described a first-person ac- count of the incident.
The rapper said, “3 cops yell stop resisting. Only thing to do is let em know. I’m not resist- ing, I’m doin what I want.”
The video, dated Saturday August 22, garnered thou- sands of views almost as soon as it was posted.
