Group Of Black Women Escorted Off Napa Valley Train
A group of Black women say they were “humiliated” after being kicked off the Napa Val- ley Wine Train tour in Califor- nia because a White woman complained about them laugh- ing loudly.
The 11 women, all members of the Sistahs on the Read- ing Edge Book Club, were met by police as they were es- corted from the locomotive, according to a Facebook status posted by one of the group’s members, Lisa Renee John- son. The woman who com- plained reportedly said “this is not a bar,” when expressing her annoyance.
Interestingly enough, the Napa Valley Wine Train serves, well, wine. In re- sponse to the outrage, which prompted the #Laughing- WhileBlack hashtag on Twit- ter, the Napa Valley Wine Train posted a message to their Facebook page defend- ing the decision to escort the women off the train, writing that it was necessary to get the police involved.
Denying the accusation that the book club directed “verbal and physical abuse” towards guests and staff, Johnson told The San Francisco Chronicle that the experience was offensive. “I felt like it was a racist attack on us,” she told the paper. “I feel like we were being singled out.”
One of the women involved was an 83-year-old grand- mother. The women were not detained or charged. Though the company has granted the women a full refund, John- son says the group deserves a public apology for the humili- ation. “They knew they were out of place,” Johnson told the paper.
Toddler Accidentally Kills Father
On last Tuesday, Divine Vaniah Chambliss, 31, was watching his 2-year-old son in their Hoover, Ala., home when he lay down to take a nap. Po- lice believe the child found his father’s gun and began playing with it.
When Chambliss’ wife re- turned home around 3 p.m., she found her husband in bed, unresponsive.
“I hurt my dad,” the little boy told his mom.
She called 911, and when emergency responders ar- rived, they found that Cham- bliss had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chambliss, who worked security at a church, carried the gun in a holster at all times, according to family who spoke with the news site. Chambliss’ family added that he always kept the gun safety

on. Police believe that the gun may have been tucked under a pillow and that the boy found it. Chambliss and his wife have a daughter who was at school at the time of the shoot- ing, and police note that only Chambliss and his son were in the home when he was shot.
