Bethune-Cookman Rolls Over Savannah State
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman continued its control of the Savannah State series Saturday with a 42-12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the Tigers before a Municipal Sta- dium crowd of 5,975, on Satur- day, Sept. 26.
Tampa native, quarterback Quentin Williams threw for 207 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for 100 yards as the Wildcats (3-1 1-0 MEAC) downed the Tigers (0-3, 0-1 MEAC) for the 16th consecu- tive time, dating back to 1992.
Michael D. Jones rushed for two scores and Jamie Wilson caught two for a Bethune-Cookman offense, which racked up 592 yards of total offense and kept the Tiger offense out of the end zone. The lone SSU touchdown was on a fourth quarter intercep- tion in the Bethune-Cookman end zone.
Bethune-Cookman did have 23 penalties for 212 yards – not a record, but that only came into play early.
Williams had a 36-yard completion to Wilson and a 37-yard connection with Ja- Quan Lumas, as the quick strike offense returned with its ninth touchdown drive of the season that spanned less than three minutes. Dubbed “Light-
Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State
ning Strikes” by the Bethune- Cookman staff, the Cats have had just a single scoring drive all year last longer than three minutes in length.
B-CU would strike quickly the rest of the game – in all, five times, as it pulled away for the team’s third consecutive victory, following a season opening setback at FBS oppo- nent Miami (Fla).
The score also marked B- CU’s first points of the season in an opening quarter.
Platooning with Williams, redshirt sophomore quarter- back Larry Brihm, Jr. led the Wildcats to a pair of second quarter scores that gave the Maroon and Gold a 21-3 half- time lead.
Anthony Jordan regis- tered his 30th career rushing touchdown, moving the gradu- ate past Jimmie Russell into
fifth on the all-time list, on an 11-yard run with 5:08 remain- ing in the first half. Brihm would connect with Jawill Davis on a 57-yard catch and run 1:20 before halftime.
Jones and Jordan rushed for 77 and 54 yards, respec- tively. Davis (77 yards) and Wilson (57) each caught three passes.
Jason Smith, Jr. had seven tackles and a quarter- back sack for a Wildcats de- fense that has not given up a touchdown in two games.
Bethune-Cookman faces North Carolina Central next Saturday at 4 p.m., in an ESPNU nationally broadcasted game. The game is set for 4 p.m., at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium in Durham, North Car- olina.
Tennessee State Scores 23 Unanswered Points Against Struggling FAMU
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Tennessee State Tigers took advantage of good field posi- tion to charge back and steal a win over rival Florida A&M on Saturday night. Tennessee State improved to 3-1 with a 30-14 win over the FAMU (0- 4) in front of 18,020 at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
Coming out of halftime, the Rattlers went for the big play on the second snap from scrimmage. Carson Royal found Kareem Smith for a 46 yard touchdown toss giving FAMU a 14-7 lead with 12:05 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Tigers would respond in a big way, by scoring 23 unan- swered points.
The tide started to turn when punter Austin Rowley pinned the Rattlers with a 48 yard punt to the 10. The de- fense held tight and forced FAMU to punt from their own end zone, creating strong field position for the Tigers.
The Rattlers came up short against the Tennessee Tigers.
TSU would need just six plays to move 47 yards for the game tying score. On a third and 15 from the FAMU 38, Ronald Butler launched a ball towards Dantwaun O’Neal, but a Rattler de- fender was there to break up the play. The ball bounded in a fortunate way for the Tigers and into the arms of Patrick Smith in the end zone.
TSU proceeded to attack the Florida A&M defense.
FAMU tried to make a
comeback, but fell short as Ezra Robinson broke up a 4thand9passattheTSU40 with 6:40 remaining to give the ball back to the Tiger of- fense.
TSU sealed the game as they held onto the ball for six minutes as they picked up the final score of the game.
Telvin Hooks carried the ball 13 times on the night for 117 yards, as the Tigers out- gained FAMU 370 to 201 total yards.
