Man Who Witnessed Rosa Parks Bus Incident Passes
Mr. Hoover Ballard,
who was on the City bus when Mrs. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in Mont- gomery, AL, December 1, 1955, passed away last Sunday. He was 89 years old.
Ballard recalled the inci- dent with Sentinel City Editor, Iris B. Holton. He told her that she said, ‘I’m tired of you people running over me.’ She was arrested when she refused to give up her seat.
Mr. Ballard had a passion for history. His family says he enjoyed recollecting stories of the past and discussing mo- mentous historic events he personally witnessed.
Mr. Ballard honorably served in both the U. S. Army and Air Force during the Ko- rean War.
After leaving the military, Mr. Ballard had an ad-
mirable 50-year career as a long-distance truck driver and a bus driver for Greyhound, a career that nurtured his love for geography and historic landmarks. Mr. Ballard en- joyed the opportunity to meet new people and cherished spending quality time with his family. He also enjoyed listen- ing to music, playing trivia, and visiting the North Lake Senior Adult Center.
He moved to Tampa in 1963, and retired December 1, 2000.
Mr. Ballard was a mem- ber of Anointing Christian Fel- lowship. Funeral services are Saturday, August 6, 2022. (See Funeral notices)
