Registered Sexual Predator Charged With Assaulting Woman
LEE ROY RETTLEY
The Hernando County Sher- iff’s Office arrested a registered sexual predator last week. He is accused of attempting to assault a woman.
According to police, at 11:30 a.m., deputies responded to calls from neighbors who heard a woman screaming from a nearby home. When deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that Lee Roy Rettley, 52, observed a woman he knew at a home while he was looking at an air condi- tioner.
He reportedly followed the woman into her living room and attacked her when she attempted to call 9-1-1. Rettley is accused of putting the woman in a choke hold and took her to a bedroom. The unidentified woman fought back and hit Rettley in the head with a box, police said.
Rettley is alleged to have at- tempted to sexually batter the woman, but was not successful be- cause the woman continued to fight him. When the neighbors heard the woman screaming, they called 9-1-1.
Rettley fled the scene through a window with money and a checkbook belonging to the victim. When deputies arrived, they found him in a storm drain near the Hernando High School Football Stadium around 1 p.m.
Rettley was declared a sexual predator in 1987 after he was ar- rested for committing sexual bat- tery against juveniles. One of his victims was under the age of 12. Those attacks took place in Palm Beach and Duval Counties, offi- cials said.
Rettley was charged with at- tempted murder, attempted sex- ual battery, and home invasion robbery. He was being held at the Hernando County Jail on an $80,000 bond.
