Florida Supreme Court Justices Slated To Retire
Three members of the Florida Supreme Court will leave the courts as a result of mandatory retirement. The Florida Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission is currently accepting applications to fill those po- sitions.
The three justices are Justice Peggy Quince, Justice Barbara Pariente, and Justice R. Fred Lewis.
Justice Peggy A. Quince was appointed to serve on the Florida Supreme Court by the late Gover- nor Lawton Chiles and Gover- nor-Elect Jeb Bush on December 8, 1998.
She became the first African American woman appointed to the panel.
A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Jus- tice Quince graduated from Howard University with a B. S. De-

gree in Zoology. She received her J. D. Degree from Catholic University of America, in 1975.
She worked with the Attorney General’s Office, Criminal Division, as an Assistant Attorney General.
She was married to the late At- torney Fred Buckine and is the mother of two daughters.
Justice Barbara J. Pariente is a native of New York City. She gradu- ated from Boston University with the highest honors. She continued her education at George Washington University Law School, and gradu- ated fifth in her class, earning highest honors.

Pariente became the 77th Justice of the Florida Supreme Court. Since 2010, she has served as the Chief Jus- tice’s designee to the Florida Children and Youth Cabinet.
She is married to Frederick A. Hazouri, the mother of three chil- dren and grandmother to 10.
Justice R. Fred Lewis was ap- pointed to the Florida Supreme Court on December 7, 1998, by the late Governor Lawton Chiles. Jus- tice Lewis is a native of Beckley, West Virginia. He graduated from Florida Southern College, in Lake- land, and received the highest honor in 1969 by being selected as the Honor Walk Student. He continued

his education at the University of Miami, School of Law and graduated cum laude in 1972.
After graduation, he served in the U. S. Army. He then entered private practice and remained there until his appointment to the U. S. Supreme Court.
Justice Lewis is married to Mrs. Judith Lewis and they are the parents of two children.
