disprove it. The researcher came to learn that this method did not always work: His recent discoveries were so shocking that his hypotheses didn’t even make sense. He described his most recent hypothesis as akin to asking, “Is this chair married?” It made no sense. So, he had to rethink how he approached science, and only because of his stature and previous work did his contemporaries not consider him crazy!
Because I believe you are reading this book because you really do want answers, either to help yourself or to help others, there is something really important I need from you in order to make this work. I need to ask you to consider an absolutely critical concept:
Embracing curiosity is how you begin to learn. And let’s be honest here: If what you already know about ending panic at- tacks and managing anxiety was the answer and it worked, you probably wouldn’t be reading this book!
This critical request is maybe the hardest thing I am go- ing to ask you to do throughout this entire book. Think about it; talk to your friends about it; stretch your comfort zone in the safety of a conversation with a wise therapist.... Do what it takes to replace being right with being curious. I’ve helped people through ARP thousands of times, and I know with great certainty that your journey to a panic-free life with anxiety management must begin here.
As much as I have tried to make the language and the explanations appeal to a wide audience, remember that there may be things that challenge or even trigger you as you read. If you notice your thoughts pushing back, take that as a cue that there might just be something for you to see in what you
