• Principles of Division Course Guide
When we are using division, we should always keep the following principles in
mind.
1. The identity number for the division. This principle states that dividing a number by 1
does not change the number. =
1
Example 1: 18 = 18 M1_L1
1
Example 2: 101 = 101
1
2. When a number (not 0) is divided by itself, the quotient is 1.
= 1
M1_L2
Example l: 27 = 1
27
Example 2: 707 = 1
707
3. When 0 is divided by a number (not 0), the quotient is 0.
Example 1: 0 = 0
3
Example2: 0 = 0
70307
4. Zero (0) can never be used as a divisor.
5. The quotient is not changed if the dividend and the divisor are multiplied by the same
number (not 0).
Example 1: 12 = 2
6
12 3 = 36 = 2
6 3 18
Example 2: 20 = 5
4
20 2 = 40 = 5
4/2 8
6. The quotient is not changed if the dividend and the divisor are divided by the same
number (not 0).
Example 1: 24 = 6
4
(24÷4) = 6
(4÷4)
Example 2: 32 = 4
8
8
32÷4 = = 4
8÷4 2
