• The Decimal Divisor Course Guide
When the divisor contains a decimal, change the divisor to a whole number
by multiplying both the dividend and the divisor by 10, 100, 1,000, and so on. Then
divide.
Example 1: 2.35 | 20.21 M1_L1
Solution:
1. Move the decimal point two places to the right to make the divisor a whole
number, ie. 235.
2. Move the decimal point in the dividend two places to the right to make it 2021.
We know that multiplying both numbers by 100 does not change the quotient. M1_L2
Thus, we have. 2.35. | 20.21.
3. By placing the decimal point for the quotient directly above the new position of
the decimal point in the dividend, we can now divide.

Example 2: Divide 6.3 by 42
Solution: Move the decimal points 2 places to the right.
Thus,
0.43. | 6.30.
Then divide:
