Port of Piraeus
In Piraeus, Greece, Hill is serving as Independent
Engineer for the Piraeus Port Authority (PPA), SA. As

Mediterranean Sea and in all of Europe, Piraeus is the the Mediterranean Sea and in all of Europe, Piraeus is
main port of Athens. Recent rankings claim Piraeus is the the main port of Athens.
busiest passenger port in Europe, with nearly 19 million
passengers in 2014. In addition, since the port privatized
in 2009, Piraeus’ container handling has grown by nearly
20% annually. According to Lloyd’s of London, Piraeus
handled some 4 million TEUs in 2015, making it the third-
largest shipping port on the Mediterranean. Industry
observers expect that, with the improvements currently
underway, Piraeus could become the busiest port in the
region by the end of 2019.
As Independent Engineer, the Hill team is supporting
multiple improvements at the Port, including conversions
of warehousing facilities to passenger terminals, port
transit systems, and mooring facilities. Hill’s services
include project controls, estimating, and scheduling,
     among others.
Vlasios Sfyroeras, Hill’s Team Leader for Piraeus, explains,
“The work underway here will transform Piraeus into the
largest shipping and ship-building base in the Eastern
Mediterranean. The PPA’s master plan will invest millions
or Euros into a number of upgrade projects, and these
early projects are just the beginning of the overall master
     plan.”
Mr. Sfyroeras says of the work, “The development at
Piraeus is similar to other port projects around the world
in that it reflects the added value this investment brings
to the local and national economy. When done correctly,
like at Piraeus, the result is a symbiotic coexistence
between port operations and the City.”
