Hill’s Port Projects Connect the World
Ports are playing an ever-increasing role
in connecting the world economically,
culturally, and socially. Although the outlook
for global shipping in general faces strong
headwinds in 2019, specific regions and
kinds of ports continue to grow. According
to World Maritime News, for example, ports
in emerging markets around the world are
likely to drive industry growth. While in the
west, major ports in the U.S., Germany, and
elsewhere continue to expand as consumer
demand remains strong for imported goods
and manufactures.
For Hill, ports represent both one of the
company’s more established areas of expertise
and an opportunity to serve clients in new
markets and regions. The company’s approach
to port projects embodies Hill’s maxim
of “global expertise combined with local
understanding.” This is evidenced at three
port projects in particular: The Port of Long
Beach in California, U.S., the COMPAS Terminal
Expansion in Cartagena, Colombia, and the
Port of Piraeus in Greece.
“[Port of Long Beach] is undertaking a massive
program,” says Ms. Stroe. “There are a variety of
construction contracts. And each individual project
can contain multiple elements, from demolition
of buildings, structures, and utilities systems, to
constructing intermodal rail yards, roadways,
terminals, and office buildings.”
