PHL is always continuing to enhance the airfield and recently completed
storm water improvements to increase the overall draining capacity.
Currently, a major set of projects is in construction to add multiple taxiways,
more holdpads and increase Runway 9R/27L by an additional 1,494 feet. At
the completion of this massive effort, the taxiway projects will provide for
improved taxiing patterns. Also, at least one full-length parallel taxiway will
serve each extended runway. Operations will be spread over more runways
and taxiways, which would decrease traffic density on the associated
taxiways.

The extension of existing Runway 9R/27L improves long-haul departure
capability at the Airport. The extended runway will provide sufficient
length to accommodate departures to currently-served and
potential international destinations without incurring substantial
payload penalties. The additional runway length may
also enable service to be provided to new long-haul
destinations that cannot reliably and economically
be served with the current runway length.
