Future Pediatric Cardiologist

Apart from attracting top graduate and undergraduate
students alike, it is worth noting that there are a number of
local high school students who are mentored by our students
and staff. Neha Gupta, a high school student from Rockwood
Summit High was mentored by Dr. Ramya Vijayakumar,
Post-Doctoral Scholar in Dr. Yoram Rudy’s laboratory during
her junior year. Recently, she was awarded third place at the
St. Louis Science Fair for her poster entitled, “Comparison of
Various Phase Algorithms and Applying Them to Atrial
Fibrillation Data Obtained Using Electrocardiographic
Imaging.” She has been accepted to Johns Hopkins
University where she will be starting her undergraduate
studies this fall. Previously, we had the chance to catch up
with them in the lab.

How did you learn about Dr. Rudy’s lab and his work?

So I was in a science research class and with that you have to find a mentor and/or a project that you are
interested in to get ideas about and so around junior year I kind of decided that BME would be really cool and I
knew that Wash. U. had one of the best BME programs in the nation so I was just scouring the website to see if there
is really anything that stood out to me and I really wanted to be a pediatric cardiologist. I remember I was sitting in
class and I was scrolling through the BME website and Dr. Rudy’s website popped up. I understood like maybe five
words in any paper I read but just the idea sounded cool so I emailed him and we kind of went from there.

I actually stumbled upon Dr. Rudy’s research synopsis on Wash. U.’s Biomedical Engineering Department’s website
and was immediately interested in his work in the field of cardiology.

the world helping children in impoverished nations”
