DESIGN INNOVATION EVENTS “ART FROM JUNK” Workshop
IIT DELHI
The Office of Dean Infrastructure and Design and Innovation Centre jointly organized an 'Art from Junk workshop'
during July – August 2017. The workshop was mentored by Mr Gopal Namjoshi an acclaimed Public Art Installation
Artist with an experience of more than 25 years.
Led by the artist's infectious enthusiasm, the team of 25 B.tech students and some MDes Students set about ideating
and conceptualising the installations. The students were divided into two teams- Wood and Metal. Discarded metal,
pipes, meters, wires, mother boards, glassware along with old furniture and cycles were collected from all
departments and deposited in front of Textile department- the selected site for the public artworks. The Wood Team
picked up a large fallen tree stump and branches. The teams set about chiseling, welding, casting, cutting, sawing
and binding. Over several cups of tea and biscuits the team kept working through the rainy monsoon month, actively
assisted by a team of welders, carpenters, painters, electricians and masons.
The first letter was formed from intricately welded rusted pieces of metal and meters. Meanwhile the Wood team
sawed, sharpened, shaped and fixed trunks, twigs and branches. Plumbing tools, pipes and elbows were stuck to
make the name board “Art from Junk'. Drums were painted and made into sitting stools. Finally, all pieces for the
Metal team came together and the three 'Pillars of Excellence' emerged as the letters IIT. While the Wood team came
up with "The Pencil Tree" with colourful pencils spreading out from the main stump.
