DESIGN INNOVATION EVENTS Workshop on Inclusive Design of
IIT DELHI Collapsible Housing

Objective
Shelter is one of the most basic necessities of mankind next to food and clothing. Apart from the permanent shelters,
at times temporary shelters are required to fill a multitude of needs. Temporary shelters are structures which are
erected to cater to a temporary need for a brief period of time – lasting for hours, days, weeks, and sometimes
months instead of years and are later dismantled or relocated.
SPA (School of Planning and Architecture) is collaborating with IIT for this Workshop to share their Design and
Architecture expertise.
The workshops aims at brainstorming between best engineering and architectural/design minds to come up with
prototypes with innovative design solutions and materials for temporary structures which can be easily erected,
dismantled and reused, versatile in design options, modular and cost effective. It will also focus on involving social
scientists to include the cultural and social aspect in the design of temporary shelters Aimed at design sensitization
of students, the workshop will take the participating students through the process of design. Through specialised
lectures on materials, technology and designing and through the steps of the workshop students will learn to work
with various materials, tools and equipment and at the end come up with a Prototype of their concept.

- A methodical approach for Need Assessment, Conceptualisation, Designing and Prototyping
- Material Study /Critical assessment and use of various materials to establish optimum linkage between need and
material properties.
