INVESTIGATING INDOOR AIR QUALITY IN
    BATHROOMS: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF

BATHROOM FANS AND WINDOWS USING AUTODESK

    COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD)

    ABSTRACT Poster Video

    RESEARCH BACKGROUND
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) directly impacts both the mental well-being and physical health
of building occupants. Long-term exposure to poor indoor air can be tremendously
hazardous to health, such as suffering cystic fibrosis and cardiac sarcoma. However,
limited research focuses on the effectiveness of ventilation in residential bathrooms. LEE TSZ CHUN

    METHODOLOGY

The project is divided into two sections: modelling and simulation. BEng (Hons) in Building Services
                                                                                 Engineering
    1. Modelling: Create 6 different bathroom models in Autodesk Fusion 360, with the
aid of Revit to address detailed construction difficulties Department of Construction,
    2. Simulation: Adjust various boundary conditions of 6-bathroom models in CFD to Environment and Engineering
simulate and visualise air particle pathways with 3 configurations.

    FINDINGS OBJECTIVES
    1. Operating exhaust fans and having windows in the bathroom at the same time is
the best approach to achieve sufficient ventilation. This project focuses on the airflow
    2. Ventilation of the entire bathroom can be achieved by opening bathroom windows; pattern of bathrooms and evaluates
ventilation of higher air velocity but limited area can be achieved by operating an the performance of bathroom fans
exhaust fan. and windows as primary ventilation
    3. Avoid installing fixtures on the same side of the fan, should the fan be installed
at the middle-top section of the wall; avoid installing fixtures on the nearest strategies using the Computational Fluid
perpendicular wall if the fan is installed on the left- or right-top sections of the wall. Dynamics (CFD) software. Additionally,
                                                                                 recommendations for optimizing
