Ramsay of Carluke were
established in 1857 as a
natural offshoot of its cattle and pig farming situated in its farm at
Wellriggs. During this time, the great-great-grandfather of the current
owners (Andrew and John Ramsay, the fifth generation of Ramsays to
look after the business) was involved in looking after the famous
white cattle of the Duke of
Hamilton. In 1875, the family, seeing
the farming side decline, bought an
old church and converted it into a
bacon factory with the products sold
from the back of a horse and cart
(which will be replicated as part of
the Jam & Ham Procession).
The bacon curing business grew through the early 1900s and in 1902
the family purchased the current factory on Carluke’s historic
Kirkton Estate.
Today, Andrew and John continue to build on the family’s close
connection with Carluke and now they have the sixth generation of
the family working in the factory.
“Ramsay have always had a close connection with the people and
area of Carluke. The commitment of Ramsay to contribute to the
support of the people and areas of Carluke is one we all share and we
are delighted again to be able to sponsor this year’s Jam and Ham
Festival.” - Andrew Ramsay
