All About Perspective Madeline Redican '20
The ocean looks different when you look up at the surface. When you look
down from above you cannot see the complexity, the life that lives under the
sea. Most look into the murky depths and see only the foam and the seaweed
that floats atop the rolling waves. When you finally put your head under the
waves you feel the cool of the water nip at your face. The salt burns a bit
when you open your eyes to experience the wonder. The fish swim past, their
metallic scales shimmering as they notice that someone has seen the secrets
of the sea.
The sea looks different though when you’re looking up at the surface from the
ocean floor. Most people see it as a way to return to the world they know
best. You swim back to the surface and take a deep breath of air before
returning to the land under the waves. You can see the brightness of the sun
before you break free from the water and can feel it for yourself. But as I sink
down further into the cool blue abyss all I can think about is how I took the
surface for granted, how I thought I could always return to the world above.
After a while I shifted to face the darkness below me. The darkness, which I
had become accustomed to, would be the last thing I see. The creature that
.
had been dragging me down finally let go of me as I slowly slipped into
unconsciousness.
