Activity: Sketch in a minute
To introduce the students to Complex Permanent Tissues, an activity “Sketch in a Minute” was
conducted. The diagram of elements constituting xylem and phloem were presented before
the students. They were asked to sketch it in a minute. While doing this, they could understand
the features of different tissues that make up xylem and phloem. They could distinguish a living
tissue (with dense cytoplasm) from a dead tissue (thickened cell wall and narrow lumen). The
students enthusiastically participated.
While the active responses by students showed their good observational skills and perception,
the questions asked by the students further spoke about their curiosity to know more. The
students were made to understand that anything that Mother Nature has introduced finds a use.
Dead tissues provide strength and support. When the various tissues in xylem work together
as unit, they are able to lift water to all the aerial parts of plant against the force of gravity - Unity
is strength.
