Plano Early Lions Club Supports “Plano Santas”
Lion Tom Seibert Director PEKLC
Twenty-two years ago Plano Santas was founded by members of the Reformed Church in Plano (RCP) to lend a helping hand to their neighbors in need. Times were tough in those days. The goal was to provide a one month supply of food to as many of those in need as they could. Everything was donated, even the cash used to buy turkeys and bread... everything is still donated. Plano Saantas dose not have a budget: each year, God provides.
Today, Plano Santas hasn't changed in philosophy, dedication or drive. They are just bigger, a lot bigger. That first year they made Christmas happen for 26 families. Twenty-two years later Plano Santas still provides a month's supply of groceries for 500 families. With God's guidance, Plano school children donate 125,000 cans of food, Cash donations buy bread, flour, sugar, raw beans, rice and fruit. Each year turkeys alone cost $7,000. All told, annual costs average $13,000 to $15,000... All donated. In addition, over 500 families donate their time to sort, package and deliver to our recipients, and don't forget the warehouse. For 30 days they need a 20,000 sq. ft. space: with electricity, plumbing, AC and health code permits... donated. They do not have a budget and they do not accept government funding. Everything needed is donated by our Plano neighbors. God has provided everything we need, every year.
Plano Santas is a ministry in Celebration of the True Spirit of Christmas, the Spirit of Giving. Plano Lions Club joins in that Christmas spirit with donations and manpower in helping the local community in supporting those in need.
