Dallas Filipino Brings Joy to the Homeless
Lion Gloria Mathur President Dallas Filipino Lions Club
There are over 6000 homeless in the DFW area. During the holiday season they feel left out and nowhere to go. The Dallas Filipino Lions Club along with HDNP decided to bring a little joy to these folks. A blanket drive was conducted by HDNP and DFLC. Grand Prairie host also donated blankets. On Dec 24, Christmas Eve, HDNP and DFLC volunteers distributed blankets to bring a little warmth to the homeless. About 350 blankets were distributed at the Unity Park in Fort Worth, where there is a concentration of shelters for the homeless. As they lined up wrapped in sheets, torn coats, they were happy to go back with a new blanket to keep them warm.
On December 29, DFLC and HDNP organized a Feed the Hungry event. In near freezing temperatures over 300 homeless gathered at the Unity Park shelter area, to be served a hot meal by HDNP and Lions. After an invocation/prayer food was served promptly at noon. Slightly used clothing and leftover blankets were also distributed. DFLC feels blessed to have the opportunity to serve those in need. It is in giving that we receive.
Plano Evening Lions Club Promotes the Peace Poster Contest
The Plano Evening Lions Club promoted the Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest at the Plano Haggard Library during the month of December with pictures of the 2018 winners of the LCI Peace Poster Contest along with past and current posters submitted to the Plano Evening Lions Club for their entry into the Peace Poster Contests.
They have been doing this several times a year at the library. This past year they held this exhibit in July and August, and again this past December. They are hoping to do it next spring or possibly in July/August time frame again. They are promoting the Peace Poster Contest in hopes that it might generate interest in the schools and contact with the art teachers. Hopefully this might generate some ideas for other Lions Clubs to embark on a successful new year.
