Rowe Architects, with Design Build Partner Biltmore Construction Company, designed Water Works Park, a City of Tampa public park space on approximately 4.5 acres located just north of I-275 on the east bank of the Hillsborough River.
The park is the current northern terminus of Tampa’s Riverwalk and provides a special event space for a variety of programming needs.
This park is notable in location, his-
tory, and purpose, with an abun-
dance of outdoor recreation op-
portunities. A truly multi-functional
public space, it contains a playground for both wet and dry play, an events lawn with a special events pavilion for performances, a dog park, a period gazebo, and a healing garden, all set along the river at the current Riverwalk terminus. The northern edge of the park features the restored natural spring that once served as the City’s drinking water supply.
The shapes of the gabled roofs are modern interpretations of the adjacent historic building’s gabled roof. The shapes begin by repeating the 7:12 sloping geometry of the historic roof, then combine with the simple, pure, repetitive forms of Japanese origami to transform into something new. Red brick se- lected to match the historic building is utilized on the larger structures and throughout the park in seat walls and accents.
