WGI was contracted by Disney Imagineering to assist in developing a pedestrian walkway and control structure for a newly created stormwater treatment area. Disney Village, located near Orlando, was renovated to include new shops and parking facilities. As part of the transfor- mation, a new stormwater treatment area was needed to provide a new settling lake for water quality and a control structure to limit the amount of water discharged. WGI was challenged with creating a structure that not only had the look and aesthetics of an old fashioned swing bridge, but that also could be constructed in a way to allow the adjacent properties to remain open during construction. Utilizing innovative design methodology and thinking, WGI sta developed the walkway with a weir system utilizing structural steel sheeting and cast-in-place concrete. The weir system allowed water to ow over the bisected lake/lagoon, providing the water storage and relief required to maintain the water quality. The sheet piles for the weir system were installed utilizing press-in technology which eliminated the vibration caused by conventional vibratory sheet installation. The press-in technology allowed adjacent properties to remain open during construction.
