Patient Education
Teach the Diet and Fluid Guidelines

• Colostomy: Avoid food with fiber for 1 4 weeks, then
reintroduce them into diet thereafter. Use filtered
pouches, deodorants
• Ileostomy: Increase fluid intake to 8-10 glasses per
day, chew food well, avoid hard to digest foods such as
nuts ,popcorn and foods with skin or seeds for 6weeks
• Urostomy :Drinking adequate fluids, 2-3 quarts daily,
will help decrease the mucus and make sure the urine
flows freely.
Patient Education
Monitor Medications
Some medications including large tablets, coated pills, time release
capsules and birth control pills may pass through without being
completely digested for patients with an ileostomy
Avoid laxatives which can cause a severe fluid and electrolyte imbalance
Recognize signs of complications
Colostomy - Constipation,
Ileostomy - dehydration, food blockage
Urostomy S/S UTI : fever, chills, bloody or cloudy urine ( clear urine
with mucus shreds is normal), may have strong odor, patient may
experience back pain in the kidney area or abdominal pain
