Drainage Procedure

 To prepare catheter:
• Clean the junction of the cap and the catheter tubing
with an alcohol wipe.
• Remove and discard the cap.
• The end of the catheter tubing must be protected from
contamination once the cap is removed. Ask patient or
caregiver to hold it if needed.
• Remove soiled gloves. Perform hand hygiene.

Drainage Procedure

Prepare the pleural drainage bottle:
• Open the pleural drainage bottle bag.
• Be sure that all of the clamps on the vacuum bottle are
closed and any accordion valves on the vacuum bottle are
depressed.
o If the accordion valve is not depressed, the vacuum seal
has been lost.
o Do not use the bottle if the accordion valve is in the "up"
position.
• Remove the plastic cover from the tip of the vacuum bottle
tubing.
• Do not touch the tip of the vacuum bottle tubing- this part
should be kept sterile.
• Open the slide clamp at the base of the vacuum bottle.
