Drainage Procedure
To begin drainage procedure:
• Insert the tip of the drainage tubing into the catheter
end.
• Twist to the right until a “click” is heard.
• Open the pinch clamp to allow drainage to begin.
During the drainage procedure:
• Assess the patient for pain, shortness of breath
and dry, hacking cough.
• If these symptoms occur, slow or stop the drainage
by pinching or closing the clamp.
• Allow the symptoms to abate and allow the patient
to relax.

Drainage Procedure
After the drainage has stopped OR 2 vacuum bottles
equaling a total of 1,000 mL have drained:
• Close the pinch clamp securely.
• Disconnect the vacuum tubing tip from the catheter
end by turning it to the left until a “click” is heard.
To recap the catheter:
• Wipe the end of the catheter with an alcohol wipe.
• Place the new cover cap on the end of the catheter.
• Assess the catheter insertion site for signs and
symptoms of infection.
