STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: MALE

• Lubricate catheter with water-soluble lubricant to
minimize urethral trauma.

• Inform patient you are ready to catheterize and ask
them to take some deep breaths and/or bear down.

• Gently insert lubricated catheter tip into meatus.

• Advance the catheter until urine starts to flow.

• Continue to advance the catheter 1 - 3 inches (5cm)
further into the bladder to ensure that catheter tip is in
the bladder and not the urethra.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: MALE

• Inflate balloon with indicated amount of sterile water (a
5 mL balloon will need 10 mL of sterile water to make
sure the balloon is symmetrical).

• If patient experiences pain with balloon inflation,
deflate immediately as catheter is still in the urethra.
Advance catheter further.

• Gently tug the catheter until resistance is felt- this
ensures proper placement of catheter.
