STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: FEMALE

 Open the sterile catheterization tray and set up the sterile
field.

 If not using a pre-packaged "closed system," use aseptic
technique to:
• Drop the catheter into the sterile tray.

• Attach drainage bag connector to the catheter.
• Place the waterproof absorbent pad under the
buttocks extending forward between the legs.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: FEMALE

 Explain procedure to patient and reinforce that although they may feel some
discomfort, you will be as gentle as possible.
 Place the fenestrated drape over the patient, exposing only the urethral meatus.

 Designate a hand to contaminate. Locate meatus and spread the area open using only
the fingers of the designated non-sterile hand.
 Do not allow labia to close until catheterization is complete.

 Using cotton balls soaked with antimicrobial solution, swab each side of the labia with a
downward stroke from pubic area to the anus.

 Repeat, using a fresh solution-soaked cotton ball for the other side.

 With the third solution-soaked cotton ball, cleanse the meatus with a single downward
stroke.
