Using the Doppler to Measure Blood Pressure
When using a Doppler: Use a normal cuff but listen with the Doppler instead of a
stethoscope. The first sound heard is approximately equivalent to the mean
arterial pressure (MAP)(normal Doppler pressure range is 60–90 mmHg).
A pressure of 60–90 mmHg is considered acceptable for patients with an LVAD.
1. Apply the B/P Cuff to upper arm
2. Palpate for the brachial artery in antecubital area
3. Apply Doppler gel to antecubital area over the brachial artery
4. Turn on Doppler
5. Place the tip of the Doppler on the brachial artery – you will hear a pulse
6. Inflate the cuff until you no longer hear a pulse, then inflate the cuff 10
to 20mm/Hg higher
7. Slowly decrease the cuff pressure until you hear the first “beat” that’s
your systolic pressure
Note: Where the first beat correlates on sypmomanometer and record as
systolic measurement over Palpation ( Example document 85/palp, no
palpable pulse)
**Optimal BP is with a MAP under 85 but the patient specific
parameters will be in the orders.**
