                              PREPARATION
                               Adhere to Standard Precautions.
                               Explain procedure to patient.
                               Use clean technique, remove dressings and discard in
                                 appropriate container.
                               Observe the wound for gaping, drainage and signs of
                                 infection. Ensure that proper healing has taken place and
                                 it is time to remove the staples.
                               Position the patient so that the incision line is without
                                 tension.

                              SUTURES
                               Assemble the necessary equipment at the bedside.
                               Reassure patient that you will be as gentle as possible.
                               Cleanse the incision line gently with antimicrobial
                                 sponges, such as Betadine swab or betadine on a gauze.
                               To remove interrupted sutures:
                                  • With forceps, grasp the knot of suture with gentle
                                    upward pull to slightly expose a small segment of the
                                    suture that was below the skin
