But then he saw the Snowman's orange nose sinking further into the cold, wet snow. This time he didn't hesitate and apped into the forest, whistling urgently to his friends.
The birds ew together to help the little Robin, from out of the snowy trees and frozen white bushes.
Each bird took a piece of the sinking Snowman's scarf and pulled him rmly out of the snow drift.
Sophie woke with a jump, she felt her heart beating fast and put her arms around Teddy. “Pff,” she whispered in his woolly ear, “It was just a silly dream.”
Tap tap, tap-tap. “Aha! I’m not going to be frightened by strange noises anymore,” she said, and thought of the brave birds from her dream, how they weren’t afraid and had saved the snowman who was sinking into the snow.
She slipped out of her warm bed, eagerly looking forward to her birthday. She quickly put on her favourite red dress, knitted from soft wool with embroidered owers.
She tried to comb her peaked hair but it jumped back up as soon as she moved. Sophie ran out of her room and dashed into the living room.
Next to the Christmas tree was her chair, decorated with colorful balloons. A beautiful garland adorned the ceiling above the dining table, where her mother with a big smile sang, "Happy birthday my little big Sophie," and gave her a loving kiss.
Sam slipped into the room, kissed Sophie’s cheek and handed his present to her. "It’s home-made," he said. It was a peep-box with a pile of thick cotton wool and a robin, drawn in chalk on a piece of cardboard, in the middle.
"Ohh!” Sophie was quiet for a moment, this was so touching. She stuttered, "That's very kind of you dear Sam."
Sophie glowed with happiness. On the table stood the freshly baked Christmas bread with fruit, nuts and candles in it. The warm candlelight spread a cozy glow on the old wooden table with its beautiful Christmas cloth. Now she really felt it was her birthday.
