Astrologists define two types of
shadows falling from the earth
onto the moon: umbra and
penumbra. Umbra is the
darkest part of Earth’s shadow;
penumbra is not so dark.
A total eclipse of the moon
occurs when the moon passes
through Earth’s umbra. A
partial eclipse will occur if the
moon is within Earth’s lighter
shadow, the penumbra.
