A full moon occurs when
the Earth is lined up between
the Sun and the moon,
and is visible when the moon
passes slightly above
or below the Earth.
When this happens, the Earth’s
shadow is cast off into space,
instead of onto the moon.
During a lunar eclipse, however,
the Earth casts its shadow
directly onto the moon.
