In 1939, World War 2 began, and Spain
remains neutral in the battle, but supports
the Axis Powers and Germany.
Then in 1959, the so-called “Spanish miracle”,
a period of economic growth and prosperity
in the country begins.
After about 40 years of Dictator Francisco
Franco’s governance, he dies in 1975, and
Juan Carlos 1 becomes the king.
In 1976, Spain now begins a transition to a
democracy and after two years, the Spanish
Constitution is issued, granting freedom of
speech, religion, and association.
In 1982, Spain joins the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization (NATO) and in 1986 Spain joins
the European Union.
