In 1898, The Spanish-American War
occurred and Spain gave up Cuba, the
Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam to
the United States.
In 1914, World War 1 begins, but Spain
remains neutral. Then in 1931, Spain
became a republic.
In 1936, The Spanish Civil War occurred
between the Republicans and the
Nationalists led by Francisco Franco. Nazi
Germany and Fascist Italy supported the
Nationalists.
In 1939, the Nationalists won the civil war
and Francisco Franco became dictator of
Spain. He remained dictator for the next
36 years.
