The lithosphere comprises the
Earth’s crust and uppermost mantle.
Colliding heat particles result in
thermal expansion which causes a
fracture between the dense and
lesser-dense areas. When plates
collide perpendicularly, they can be
destroyed causing the denser
oceanic crust of one plate to
submerge and fall under the lighter
continental crust of the other plate.
As the top plate is consumed by the
mantle beneath it, it melts and the
crumbles upwards to form a
mountain range.
