De Minimis (Minimal) Benefits
/!\ Holiday gifts. If your employer gives you a turkey, ham, or other item
of nominal value at Christmas or other holidays, don’t include the value
of the gift in your income. However, if your employer gives you cash or a
cash equivalent, you must include it in your income. /!\
If your employer provides you
with a product or service and
the cost of it is so small that it
would be unreasonable for
the employer to account for it,
you generally don’t include its
value in your income.
In most cases, don’t include in
your income the value of
discounts at company
cafeterias, cab fares home
when working overtime, and
company picnics.
