5 Pick any strand from the top part of the splice, and open the strand

directly to its left (or to its right if using left-hand laid rope). Use a

marlinspike or fid if necessary.

6 Tuck the first strand under its neighbour, and pull it up firmly. Tuck the

other two strands on that side of the splice under the strands
