Tom Fool’s sheepshank
As well as using the Tom Fool’s knot to play
‘parlour tricks’ (here), sailors might put it to good
practical use shortening lines, thanks to a simple
twist.
1 Tie a Tom Fool’s knot in the usual way.
2 Tie a half hitch at either end of the loops, in the style of a sheepshank.
