               As  well  as  using  the  Tom  Fool’s  knot  to  play


               ‘parlour  tricks’  (here),  sailors  might  put  it  to  good
               practical  use  shortening  lines,  thanks  to  a  simple


               twist.





















                                     1  Tie a Tom Fool’s knot in the usual way.
























                2    Tie a half hitch at either end of the loops, in the style of a sheepshank.
