               Highwayman’s hitch

This knot was used by the legendary eighteenth-

century highwayman Dick Turpin as a getaway knot
for his horse while he was performing his dastardly

deeds. Or so the story goes. It certainly has a tricky
character – more like a balancing act than a knot.

1 Pass a bight over the anchoring point – branch, post or hitching rail.
