This knot was once used to lift cables onto

telegraph poles, according to knot guru Clifford
Ashley. There’s not a lot to it and it won’t take a

great weight, but it’s strangely satisfying anyway.

1 Throw a long line over a branch (or telegraph pole!), and tie a bell

ringer’s knot into the long end. Extra hitches can be added to lift a heavier

load.
