                Carrick Bend

The carrick bend is one of my favorite knots. When tied a
little loose and kept flat, this is an attractive and balanced

knot. You may know the carrick bend as the Josephine
Knot—the official knot of the Girl Scouts. The other name
for the knot is the sailor’s breastplate knot. According to
John Hensel’s book Ornamental Knots, the hoses on the

front of the diver’s suit were tied in this way.
