70 < Marlinspike Sailor’s Knots and Crafts
To decorate the wooden box with
cable/homemade rope 4-strand
ocean plat sennit sennits, braids, and knots, follow
these steps and refer to the picture
of the box at the beginning of the
chapter:
1 > Create the sennits, cable, ocean
plat knot, and Turk’s Head
knot (described in Chapter 1)
referred to in the materials list.
2 > Shellac the box and allow it to
dry.
3 > Wrap the sennit around the
sides of the box as shown in
the picture on the chapter
opener and glue it in place.
Cut its length to fit, if needed.
Shellac and allow it to dry.
4 > Glue the second sennit, cable,
and Turk’s Head knot to the top
of the box as shown. Cut their
length to fit, if needed.
5 > Cover the “seam” where the
sennit and cable meet on top
of the box with the ocean plat
knot; glue it in place.
6 > Tie two Turk’s Heads knots and
nest the smaller one inside the
other as described in Chapter 1.
Glue it to the center of the box
top.

Decorated for a 3-strand sennit on top
Wooden Box 6 feet of #18 cotton seine twine
for a cable/homemade rope
4-inch by 2-inch by 2-inch inside the sennit on top
unfinished wooden box 4 feet of #30 cotton seine twine
12 feet of #30 cotton seine for each base and Turk’s
twine for a 3-strand sennit Head knot on top
around the box white glue
3 feet of #18 cotton seine twine sharp knife or scissors
for an ocean plat knot used to shellac and brush
hide the sennit seam on top ruler
9 feet of #30 cotton seine twine masking tape
