9. Come and Sing the Christmas Story
Our final carol is by Michael Perry (1942–1996). He was a Church of England
th
clergyman and one of the leading hymn writers of the 20 Century. He wrote
over 300 hymns with probably his most famous being the ‘Calypso Carol’. He was
editor of various hymn books including the popular ‘Hymns for Today’s Church’
(1982). ‘Come and Sing’ is an appeal to all to join in the joyous birth of Christ
the Saviour.
It is often sung to the well-known Welsh tune ‘All through the Night’. I have
given it a more up-beat feel with organ accompaniment providing different but
complementary rhythms to the tune sung by the choir. The second verse is more
reflective and sober before a return to the mood of the first verse but, of course,
up a notch!
Come and sing the Christmas story Lord of all! Let us acclaim him
this holy night! this holy night;
Christ is born: the hope of glory king of our salvation name him,
dawns on our sight. throned in the height.
Alleluia! earth is ringing Son of Man let us adore him,
with a thousand angels singing all the earth is waiting for him;
hear the message they are bringing Son of God we bow before him
this holy night. this holy night.
