personally well regarded by her peers. It was noted that she has written about issues related to students with disabilities.
Deb said the concept is exciting to think about. She noted that USF has a new President, and the Provost and Associate Provost are both leaving. However, the transition could provide an opportunity for a pilot program. Deb leads an Access Committee that the new President established. She commented that about 2,600 students at USF’s combined campuses use the services of the Student Accessibility Services office. Because of the challenge of finding mentors for all of them, Deb suggested starting at a smaller campus like St. Petersburg. That campus serves about 100 students. Across the university, some of the colleges like Nursing and Business already have a strong alumni base that could serve as a source for mentors. She said her office also has a good relationship with the Honors College.
Her next step would be to speak to the Dean of Students first, then to reach out to the Deans of Nursing and Business. She will also speak to Allison Dinsmore, the Assistant Director of SAS in St. Pete, as well as Allison’s counterpart at the Sarasota-Manatee campus.
INTERESTING SIDE NOTE:
The Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) is the premier professional membership association of its kind, with state and regional affiliates across the United States. Bea, Kris and Deb are all past Presidents of FL-AHEAD. Michelle is the current President.
