Meteorology

For example, BKN 008 means it is cloudy with the base at 800 feet.

                3.6.8.2 Vertical visibility (VER VIS)

Vertical visibility refers to the maximum distance at which one can distinguish

an object from its surroundings in the vertical direction.

VER VIS is used when snowfall, fog, or thick mist prevents seeing clouds or the

                sky.

If, due to fog, heavy precipitation, or similar, the height of the clouds cannot be

                specified, the maximum visible height

                into the "soup" is indicated.

                Electronic equipment is used to

measure VER VIS (vv). For example, vv

001 means visibility is 100 feet

                upwards.

                3.6.8.3 Meteorological visibility

Meteorological visibility is defined as the greatest distance at which a black
object of appropriate size can be seen and recognized against the sky horizon

under normal daylight conditions. Meteorological visibility is measured at a

height of 2 meters above the ground (10 meters above water).
