Meteorology
3.6.8.5 Visibility at takeoff and landing
In MET REPORT / SPECIAL (METAR / SPECI), only one value is given if visibility is
the same in the departure and arrival areas.
If visibility differs in the departure and arrival areas, a visibility value is given for
each of the areas.
3.6.8.6 Runway visual range (RVR)
Runway visual range (RVR) is the greatest distance at which a pilot in an aircraft
on the centerline of the runway can see runway markings or lights that show
the runway or identify its centerline.
RVR is given in meters when MET VIS or RVR visibility is less than 1500 meters.
3.6.8.7 Causes of reduced visibility
Many conditions can cause reduced visibility, such as:
- Fog, low fog, fog banks
- Dry mist, fog mist
- Snow, blowing snow
- Rain, drizzle
- Dust, sandstorms
- Smoke
