Principles of flight

5.10.2.1 Best climb angle and best climb rate

Different speeds can be used for climbing.

However, there are 2 significant climb speeds:

                   - Vx is the climb speed we need to achieve the steepest climb. This means

that we get the most feet higher per distance.

                   - Vy is the climb speed we need to get to a given altitude the fastest, in

                      relation to time.

               5.10.2.2 Best climb rate Vy

The illustration here shows how to find the best climb rate (where we get the

most feet per unit of time).

Where the distance between the 2 lines

is greatest, the speed for Vy (yellow

               arrow) is found.

This is where there is the greatest

surplus of power, and where we can

climb the highest number of feet per

               minute.

The speed will change with increasing

altitude, so that Vy becomes smaller the higher you climb.
